DESCRIPTION:  Body length up to 10mm. A cracking Saw-Fly with several similar species.  The abdomen is golden and very shiny with the apical third of segments 4-7 smoother and shinier between the punctures. The male's eyes are separated on the top of the head by about half the width of an ocellus. The antennae in both sexes are dark on the apical and basal segments with middle segments yellow. BEHAVIOUR: Adults are frequently seen feeding at Scabious plants. Larvae feed on members of the Dipsacaceae family which includes Scabious species. A cocoon is made below ground. DISTRIBUTION: A well distributed species with scattered records from all of the UK. HABITAT: Seen in a variety of habitats with open grassland, woodland edges and verdant hedgerows preferred. PERIOD: On the wing from May to August.
